Fuzz and stiff yarn in texturing machines come from different sources. Some trace back to raw yarn, some to process settings, and some to equipment condition. In practice, the two defects often overlap.
Causes of fuzz
Raw yarn quality: Poor raw yarn is a major cause of fuzz.
Excessive processing speed: Too high a speed can damage fiber structure and produce large amounts of fuzz.
Insufficient draw ratio and contact pressure: If draw ratio is too low or contact pressure between yarn and friction discs is insufficient, fuzz can form.
Improper false-twist tension: False-twist tension that is too high or too low can cause fuzz, especially in fine denier, multi-hole, high-elasticity DTY.
Friction disc material and temperature: A material with high friction coefficient or excessive temperature can soften and stick fibers, which increases fuzz.
Causes of stiff yarn
Long segment deformation failure: This can result from violating operating procedures, poor equipment condition, or high unevenness in raw yarn denier.
Stacked twist yarn: Related to too high a D/Y ratio, uneven POY denier, or reduced detwisting tension.
Tight twist yarn: Too high a heater box temperature softens the fiber surface and increases tackiness, which causes single filaments to stick together.
Undetwisted yarn: Unstable yarn movement, tension fluctuation, improper DTY process selection, or poor POY quality can leave yarn undetwisted.
Other factors
Drawing and texturing process parameters: Improper selection of the T1/T2 ratio, processing speed, D/Y ratio, and deformation heater box temperature can all lead to stiff yarn.
Equipment and raw yarn condition: Poor equipment condition or unstable raw yarn quality can cause instant tension fluctuation, twist escape, and tight spots, which then form stiff yarn. Keeping equipment clean, in good condition, and raw yarn quality stable is key to avoiding stiff yarn.
