Cross-width thickness variation on a cylinder paper machine usually comes from uneven stock distribution, unstable cylinder mold speed, vacuum box pressure imbalance, and other process control problems. The causes fall into four groups: equipment structure, process control, operation and maintenance, and material factors.

Equipment structure

Cylinder mold concentricity deviation: Radial runout above 0.05 mm causes uneven fiber distribution.

Couch roll pressure imbalance: When the pressure difference between the two ends exceeds 5%, thickness variation appears.

Poor vacuum box sealing: Local vacuum fluctuation above ±2 kPa affects dewatering uniformity.

Hansheng Automation can machine custom cylinder molds, couch roll parts, vacuum box seals, and doctor blade holders from customer drawings, in single pieces or small batches.

Process control

Stock consistency fluctuation: When consistency changes by more than ±0.05%, forming uniformity is affected.

Machine speed mismatch: The speed difference between the cylinder mold and the felt should be controlled within 0.2% to 0.5%.

Abnormal white water circulation: A fiber retention difference above 3% leads to cross-direction basis weight variation.

Operation and maintenance

Insufficient felt cleaning: When permeability in a blocked area drops by more than 15%, clean the felt immediately.

Doctor blade angle offset: An installation angle deviation above ±1° causes uneven thickness.

Cylinder mold blockage: When the blockage rate of a single mesh hole exceeds 5%, stop the machine for handling.

Material factors

Uneven fiber length distribution: When the proportion of long fiber above 2 mm fluctuates by more than 5%, interweaving uniformity is affected.

Poor filler dispersion: When filler distribution CV is above 8%, thickness fluctuation gets worse.

These factors often interact. Troubleshooting should check equipment, process, maintenance, and material together.

Beyond the cylinder paper machine parts discussed above, our precision component customization is not limited to papermaking. We machine yacht precision components, RC car precision components, tobacco packaging machinery parts, filling machinery parts, printing machinery parts, food machinery parts, and medical device components. Hansheng Automation works from customer drawings and delivers one-off or batch parts to the required material, tolerance, and surface finish. Our scope is precision components, not complete machines.
