Rollers on an adhesive tape coating machine fall into five groups by function: feed and substrate transport, coating and forming, drying and curing, cooling and setting, and winding and unwinding. Each group has common industry names.

I. Feed and substrate transport rollers

(1) Unwind roller

Also called the feed roller. It supports the original film or adhesive tape substrate roll and releases substrate at a steady speed with the tension control system. It is the starting point of the production line feed.

(2) Guide roller

A general transition roller. It adjusts the substrate path. Some guide rollers work with a photoelectric edge correction system and are called correction guide rollers. They fix substrate wandering.

(3) Tension roller

Also called the tension control roller. It detects and stabilizes substrate tension through floating or fixed loading. Models with pneumatic or hydraulic loading devices are often called pneumatic tension rollers.

II. Coating and forming rollers

(1) Application roller

Also called the adhesive supply roller. It transfers adhesive from the adhesive tank to the gravure roller or doctor roller surface. On some gravure coating models, it also levels the adhesive and can be called a leveling roller.

(2) Gravure roller

A core roller for precision coating. Its surface has regular gravure cells. Cell depth controls the amount of adhesive applied. In the industry it is also called a metering roller.

When these precision rollers wear or need replacement, we machine custom rollers from customer drawings in single pieces or small batches.

(3) Back pressure roller and doctor roller

The doctor roller works with a doctor blade to scrape excess adhesive from the substrate. The back pressure roller is a support roller for the doctor blade mounting seat. It adjusts the contact pressure between blade and substrate to keep scraping accurate.

(4) Lamination roller

It bonds the tape face material and release film in a two-layer lamination. A heated lamination roller is called a heating lamination roller and can help the adhesive layer cure initially.

III. Drying and curing rollers

(1) Drying guide roller

Installed inside the coating drying oven. It supports the substrate as it moves through the drying tunnel at a steady speed. Models with steam or electric heating are called heating drying guide rollers. They help raise substrate temperature and speed up solvent evaporation or adhesive curing.

(2) Pull guide roller

Located at the drying section exit. It pulls the substrate steadily through the drying tunnel and prevents wrinkles or wandering caused by slack.

IV. Cooling and setting rollers

(1) Cooling roller

A common industry name. Cooling water or coolant runs inside to cool the tape substrate just after coating and lamination. It stabilizes the adhesive layer structure and substrate dimensions. Water-cooled types are often called water-cooled cooling rollers.

(2) Calender roller

Used on some high-end adhesive tape coating models. Heat and pressure make the adhesive surface flatter and smoother. It is also called a smoothing roller.

V. Winding and unwinding rollers

(1) Rewind roller

Also called the receiving roller. It winds finished adhesive tape after all processes into finished rolls. A rewind roller with a closed-loop tension control system is called a tension rewind roller.

(2) Rewinding roller for slitting

A matching roller for the slitting process. It rewinds wide finished adhesive tape into narrow specifications after cutting. It is also called a splitting roller.

Our precision custom machining covers more than adhesive tape coating machine rollers. Hansheng Automation also produces non-standard parts for yacht hardware, RC car components, filling machinery, tobacco packaging machinery, medical devices, printing equipment, and food machinery. We work from customer drawings for single-piece and small-batch runs. The focus is precision parts machining and delivery, so maintenance and replacement stay flexible across different industries.
