Sheet thickness on a PVC calendering machine is controlled by adjusting the roll gap, roll temperature, feed rate, and roll speed. These parameters affect material flow, melt behavior, and sheet formation. Adjustments should be made carefully to maintain the required thickness tolerance.

Roll gap adjustment

The gap between the rolls directly affects the thickness of the finished sheet. Adjustment can be performed manually or electrically.

Manual adjustment: Turn the handwheel connected to the worm gear mechanism or lead screw and nut assembly. Monitor sheet thickness with a thickness measuring instrument during adjustment. Each adjustment should not exceed 0.1 mm to prevent sudden gap changes from disrupting material compression.

Electric adjustment: Enter the target value on the control panel and monitor servo motor operation. The roll parallelism error should remain below 0.05 mm. If it exceeds this limit, stop the machine and recalibrate the rolls.

Roll temperature control

Temperature has a significant effect on the rheological properties of PVC melt.

The middle roll is typically set to 165 to 180°C. For the specified process, increasing the temperature by 5°C can reduce sheet thickness by approximately 0.15 mm.

A zoned temperature control system is recommended to maintain consistent heating. The temperature difference among the three rolls should not exceed ±3°C.

Feed rate adjustment

The material feed rate must match the processing capacity of the rolls. If the feed rate changes, the amount of material entering the roll gaps also changes, affecting the finished sheet thickness.

For the specified process, increasing the extruder screw speed by 10 rpm increases sheet thickness by approximately 0.3 mm.

A variable frequency drive can be used for fine speed adjustment. At the same time, monitor pressure fluctuations in the feeding section and keep them within ±1 MPa.

Roll speed adjustment

Roll speed affects the shear rate and residence time of the material during calendering.

Increasing the main roll speed by 20% can reduce sheet thickness by approximately 12%. The take off roll speed should be increased at the same time to maintain a balanced pulling force.

A dynamic tension sensor is recommended to monitor material tension and correct speed settings in real time, helping prevent wrinkles during production.

Adjustment sequence and thickness control

When adjusting multiple parameters, follow the sequence of temperature adjustment first, roll gap setting second, and speed fine tuning last. Change only one variable at a time and allow 15 minutes between adjustments to observe the results.

After each adjustment, check the sheet thickness and confirm that it remains within the required tolerance of ±0.02 mm. Consistent monitoring helps identify the effect of each parameter change and reduces unnecessary adjustments.
