The cut surface itself does not corrode because of laser processing. It may corrode in harsh environments. Here is the breakdown.
Laser cutting is a pipe processing method. It can replace traditional abrasive wheel cutting. A high-energy laser beam melts or vaporizes material to form a cut. This is physical processing. It does not change the material nature of 304 stainless steel. So the cut surface does not change or become more prone to corrosion because of the process itself.
After laser cutting, the cut surface of 304 stainless steel pipe is usually smooth. High temperature may form a thin oxide film on the surface. In normal environments, this film offers some protection. It does not directly cause corrosion. If cutting parameters are wrong, such as too high power or too slow speed, local overheating can thicken the oxide film or create cracks. That can indirectly affect corrosion resistance.
Corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel depends on the passive film on its surface, mainly chromium oxide. In harsh environments, such as high humidity, chloride-containing conditions, strong acids, or strong bases, the passive film can break down. The cut surface exposes fresh metal, so it may be attacked more easily than a complete surface.
Normal environment: the laser cut surface does not corrode because of processing. Its corrosion resistance matches the uncut surface.
Harsh environment: the cut surface may corrode more easily because the passive film is damaged. This is caused by the environment, not by the cutting process itself.
If the pipe will be used in a corrosive environment, post-treat the cut surface. Polishing or acid pickling and passivation can restore the passive film and improve corrosion resistance. We can machine custom nozzles, protective lens holders, fixtures, and other precision parts for laser cutting machines from customer drawings, for single-piece or low-volume production.
Our custom precision component machining capability is not limited to laser cutting. Beyond cutting nozzles, protective lens holders, and fixtures, we also machine yacht precision components, RC car structural parts, medical device parts, and non-standard parts for tobacco packaging machinery, filling machinery, and printing machinery. Hansheng Automation works from customer drawings and production quantities to deliver single-piece or low-volume precision machining.
