In general, yes. A larger taper means tension drops faster as the roll diameter grows. The tension in the later stage of rewinding is lower, and the average tension is also lower. A more precise way to say it is this: taper controls how quickly tension decays.

What taper tension does

During slitting and rewinding, constant tension can cause problems. As the roll grows, outer layers press harder on inner layers. This can deform or wrinkle the inner layers and make unwinding difficult later. Taper tension solves this by lowering tension as roll diameter increases. This balances stress between inner and outer layers.

How taper value affects tension

Taper is the rate at which tension decreases. As roll diameter goes from the initial value to the maximum value, tension falls according to the taper setting.

Small taper: Tension drops slowly. The roll stays tighter overall, and inner layers carry more pressure.

Large taper: Tension drops quickly. Tension at the end of rewinding is clearly lower. Outer layers are looser, and pressure on inner layers is smaller.

So a larger taper means lower end tension and lower average tension.

Initial tension is still set by the process

A larger taper does not automatically mean the initial tension is low. Initial tension comes from the process setting, not from taper alone. Taper controls how much tension drops and how fast it drops from start to finish.

How to choose taper in practice

Thin, soft, easy-to-deform materials often use a larger taper to prevent inner layer wrinkling and deformation.

Materials that need a tight, hard roll often use a smaller taper to keep overall tension higher.

Taper too large: Outer layers may be too loose. This can cause slipping, loose winding, or uneven roll edges.

Taper too small: Inner layers may wrinkle or deform under pressure from outer layers.

For slitting machine builders, Hansheng Automation can machine custom tension shafts, slitter blades, guide rolls, and roll components from customer drawings, in single pieces or small batches.

Conclusion

A larger taper makes tension fall faster as roll diameter increases. End tension becomes lower, and average tension is lower. But initial tension is still determined by the process setting. Choose taper based on material properties, roll hardness, and later processing needs.

Beyond slitting machine parts, our precision component customization covers more than one industry. We machine yacht precision components, RC car precision components, medical device components, filling machinery parts, printing machinery parts, food machinery parts, and tobacco packaging machinery parts. Hansheng Automation works from customer drawings and delivers one-off or batch parts to the required material, tolerance, and surface finish.
