Shot peening can help reduce part fatigue and is used to extend the fatigue life of metal components. Shot peening is the process which blast a high-speed stream of shots onto parts' surface and cause plastic deformation in the surface layer. Thereby the part form a hardened layer of a certain thickness, within which high residual stress is generated. Due to the presence of compressive stress on the surface, the component can offset a portion of the applied load, improving its fatigue strength.

Process features

Types of shots include steel shots, cast iron shots, glass beads, and ceramic shots. The process features simple equipment, low cost, and easy operation, with no restrictions on the shape or location of workpiece. However, it suffers from a poor working environment, low unit output, and is less efficient than shot blasting.

Feature

Improving fatigue strength: The residual compressive stress layer counteracts tensile stress under working loads, retarding crack initiation and propagation, thereby the service life of parts will be extended.

Improving wear resistance: Surface plastic deformation hardens the surface layer and reduce wear.

Improve stress corrosion resistance: The compressive stress layer seals micro-pores, reducing the erosion of the material by environmental media.

Surface cleaning: It can remove mill scales, old paint films, rust, etc., but the cleaning effect is not as thorough as sandblasting.

Common Types

Pneumatic shot peening: Uses compressed air to propel shot media. It offers high precision and is suitable for complex shapes and localized strengthening.

Mechanical shot blasting: Propels shot media via high-speed rotating impellers. It offers high efficiency and is suitable for large components or mass production.

Wet shot peening: The shot media is mixed with water before being sprayed. This suppresses dust, reduces surface wear, and achieves a finer surface finish.

Key parameters

Material and Size: Shot media of different materials (such as cast steel shot, ceramic beads) and diameters are suitable for different workpieces and process requirements.

Shot peening intensity: Determined by shot diameter, stream velocity, flow rate, and peening time. It is typically characterized by the arc height of Almen strips.

Coverage: The percentage of the surface impacted by shot media. Typically, the coverage need to reach over 98% and then it is required to be considered effective strengthening.

Jetting angle and distance: These affect the shot impact force and surface roughness. Typically, vertical jetting yields the best results.

FAQ

Q: Which type of parts are suitable for shot peening?

A: Shot peening is suitable for small workpieces with complex shapes. Surface treatment with shot peening has a strong impact force and a remarkable cleaning effect.

Q: What effect does the workpiece achieve after shot peening?

A: After shot peening, surface contaminants are removed without damaging the workpiece, and the surface area is increased. Since the surface of workpiece is not damaged during processing, the excess energy generated during processing will cause surface strengthening of the workpiece substrate.

Q: How does the finish look after shot peening?

A: The surface of workpiece after shot peening has original metallic color. However, due to the spherical surface, part of the light is refracted, so the workpiece is processed to have a matte effect.
