Chromium nitride (CrN) coating is a specialized metal hard coating produced through physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology. This process makes the surface harder than steel, extremely smooth, and chemically inert. It is suitable for applications requiring high load-bearing capacity and resistance to adhesive wear (galling).

Q: What is the difference between CrN and TiN? Which one should I choose now?

A: TiN (gold) is a good universal coating. But if you are dealing with high loads, corrosive environments, or processing viscous materials such as copper, aluminum, or titanium, CrN (silver) is better because CrN has better wear resistance.

Q: Will the coating change the dimensions of my high-precision CNC parts?

A: The impact is minimal. CrN is a thin film coating (usually 2-4 microns), which is within the tolerance range. For ultra precision parts, we can explain this growth during the CNC machining stage - this is the advantage of our one-stop service.

Q: What materials can be coated with CrN?

A: We can coat most tool steels, stainless steels, high-speed steels (HSS), carbides, as well as certain grades of titanium and copper alloys.

A: The standard thickness is between 1 and 5 microns (µm). Because the PVD layer is extremely thin and uniform, it follows the exact geometry of the part, preserving sharp edges, fine threads, and tight tolerances without requiring post-coat machining.

Q: Can CrN coating be applied to aluminum substrates?

A: Because the PVD process requires temperatures between 200°C and 450°C, the substrate must be able to withstand this heat without losing its mechanical properties or warping. High-temperature aluminum alloys or specific low-temperature PVD processes can be evaluated by our engineering team on a case-by-case basis.

Q: How does CrN coating compare to Hard Chrome Plating?

A: CrN is a dry, environmentally friendly PVD process that offers higher hardness (up to 2200 HV vs. 1000 HV for hard chrome) and excellent adhesion. Unlike traditional wet electroplating, PVD CrN does not carry the risk of hydrogen embrittlement or generate hazardous hexavalent chromium waste.
