New car sales in the European Union fell 18.3% year-on-year in August, the lowest level in three years, dragged down by double-digit declines in major markets such as Germany, France and Italy, according to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) on Thursday.

EU BEV sales plunged 43.9% year-on-year in August, the fourth consecutive month of decline. Germany and France, the EU's largest EV markets, saw declines of 68.8% and 33.1%, respectively.
IT Home noted that sales of plug-in vehicles fell by 22.3% year-on-year, while sales of hybrid vehicles increased by 6.6% year-on-year, reaching a market share of 31.3%.
The three major European automakers, Volkswagen, Stellantis and Renault, all saw sales decline from a year earlier, at 14.8%, 29.5% and 13.9%, respectively. Electric car maker Tesla's sales fell 43.2% year-over-year, and China's SAIC saw a 27.5% year-over-year decline.
