A flat vulcanizing press uses a hydraulic system to apply pressure and a heating system to vulcanize rubber inside a mold. The hydraulic system controls the movement of the lower platen and maintains the required pressure during vulcanization. Once the heating cycle is complete, the operator opens the mold and removes the finished part.
Hydraulic pump operation and oil circulation
When the electric motor starts, hydraulic oil flows from the reservoir through the oil filter and into the hydraulic pump. The pump then delivers the oil through the discharge pipe to the control valve.
When the manual valve is closed, hydraulic oil flows through the control valve and connecting pipes into the hydraulic cylinder. This drives the plunger upward, raising the lower platen.
Pressure control and holding
When the pressure inside the hydraulic cylinder reaches the preset upper limit, the electrical contact pressure gauge activates its control contacts and stops the hydraulic pump motor.
The check valve then closes automatically to retain the pressure inside the cylinder. This allows the press to maintain the required clamping pressure during the vulcanization process.
Pressure maintenance and adjustment
As the pressure inside the hydraulic cylinder decreases to the preset minimum operating pressure, the electrical contact pressure gauge activates the pump motor again. The hydraulic pump resumes operation and raises the pressure.
This cycle of stopping and restarting the pump continues until the specified vulcanization heating time has elapsed, helping maintain pressure throughout the process.
Vulcanization heating and part removal
A mold is secured between the upper and lower platens. The mold is typically heated by electrically heated tubes with automatic temperature control.
The rubber inside the mold is heated for several minutes, allowing vulcanization to take place. During this process, crosslinking gives the rubber a stable structure and fixes the product's shape.
When vulcanization is complete, the motor stops. The operator can then open the mold and remove the finished rubber part.
