Mechanical seals are used where a rotating or reciprocating part meets a fixed housing and leakage must be controlled. They appear in industrial production, transport, and public infrastructure. The sections below cover the main application areas.

Petrochemical and chemical processing

This is one of the largest application areas. Mechanical seals are used on centrifugal pumps, screw pumps, compressors, stirred reactors, and centrifuges. They handle corrosive, flammable, and explosive media. If the seal fails, the result can be a leak, fire, or explosion. Examples include circulation pumps in refinery units and compressor seals in ethylene cracking units.

Power generation

In thermal power plants, mechanical seals are used on feed pumps and circulating water pumps. In hydropower plants, they seal turbine shafts. In nuclear power plants, they are used on primary loop equipment. A seal failure in nuclear service can release radioactive material, so the reliability requirements are strict.

Marine and offshore engineering

The main application is stern shaft sealing. The seal keeps seawater out of the hull. Mechanical seals are also used on pumps for main and auxiliary engines, where they contain fuel and lubricating oil. This makes them a key part of safe vessel operation.

Food and pharmaceutical production

These industries use sanitary mechanical seals. They appear on food processing mixing tanks, filling machine pumps, pharmaceutical centrifuges, and reactors. The goal is to prevent product contamination and meet GMP and other compliance requirements.

Automotive and rail transit

Mechanical seals are used in automotive gearboxes, fuel pumps, and electric drive systems on new energy vehicles. In rail transit, they seal axle boxes on locomotives and bogies on high-speed trains. They keep lubricating oil and coolant from leaking and support normal equipment operation.

Mining and metallurgy

Mechanical seals are used on slurry pumps, flotation cell agitator shafts, continuous casting pumps, and blast furnace circulating pumps. They resist high wear and high temperature from slag and metallurgical media.

Water treatment and environmental protection

Applications include supply pumps in water plants, sludge pumps in wastewater treatment plants, and mixing equipment for industrial wastewater treatment. The seals keep sewage and chemicals from leaking into the environment.

Aerospace

This is a high-end application area. Mechanical seals are used in aircraft engine fuel systems, hydraulic systems, and spacecraft propulsion systems. They must withstand extreme temperature, pressure, and corrosion conditions. Reliability requirements are very high.

Agriculture and general industry

Mechanical seals are used on agricultural irrigation centrifugal pumps, hydraulic systems on harvesters, and livestock waste treatment equipment. They provide low-cost, reliable fluid sealing for daily production work.

When a shaft sleeve, spring seat, or gland part wears out, Hansheng Automation can machine a replacement from customer drawings. We match material, tolerance, and surface treatment to the working conditions.

Hansheng Automation also machines custom precision parts beyond seal applications. We work from customer drawings for yacht components, RC car components, tobacco packaging machinery parts, filling machinery parts, and other non-standard parts for printing, food, and medical equipment. We handle single pieces and small batches.
