Mechanical seals and gland packing both control leakage around a rotating shaft. They differ in sealing performance, structure, service life, and the conditions they suit. The right choice depends on the working conditions, equipment requirements, cost, and maintenance needs.
Sealing performance and working conditions
A mechanical seal gives strong sealing performance. It suits high pressure, high temperature, and high shaft speed. A gland packing seal gives moderate sealing performance. It is mainly used for low speed, low pressure, and smaller shaft diameters.
Structure and components
A mechanical seal has a more complex structure. It includes a rotating ring, a stationary ring, springs, a shaft sleeve, and other precision-machined parts. Each part has to fit and work together. If a rotating ring, stationary ring, spring, or shaft sleeve wears out, Hansheng Automation can machine a replacement from customer drawings. We match material, tolerance, and surface treatment to the working conditions.
Gland packing is simpler. It consists of packing and a stuffing box. The packing is compressed to create the seal.
Performance and service life
A mechanical seal lasts longer and needs less maintenance. Its sealing performance stays stable. Gland packing has a shorter service life. It needs regular packing replacement, and sealing performance drops over time.
Applications
Mechanical seals are common in petrochemical, paper, pharmaceutical, food, power, and mining industries. They fit equipment that runs at high pressure, high temperature, and high speed. Gland packing is common on pumps, valves, and compressors with low pressure, low speed, and smaller shaft diameters.
Choosing between them
The choice depends on the actual working conditions, equipment requirements, cost, and feasibility. Mechanical seals cost more and need more careful installation, but they hold up better in demanding service. Gland packing costs less and is simpler to replace, but it needs more frequent attention and suits lighter duty.
Hansheng Automation also machines custom precision parts beyond seals. Our drawing-based service covers yacht components, RC car parts, filling machinery, and tobacco packaging machinery, along with other non-standard work for food, printing, and medical equipment. We work from customer drawings for single pieces and small batches.
