Punch breakage is relatively common in high‑speed tablet presses. The main reasons can be summarized as follows:

  • Excessive pressure: If the material is hard to compress or the pressure adjustment is improper, the punch will bear overload stress. Small‑diameter punches are especially prone to bending or even fracture.
  • Guide rail wear or motion obstruction: Worn guide rails cause abnormal movement of the punch rod, generating additional impact loads that accelerate fatigue damage.
  • Tooling material or heat treatment defects: Under prolonged high‑speed operation, insufficient toughness or uneven surface hardness may lead to micro‑cracks that grow into fractures.
  • Improper installation and fit: Too large or too small a clearance between the punch rod and the die can cause sticking or lateral forces that induce breakage.

The working principle of a high‑speed tablet press involves filling, metering, pre‑compression, main compression, and ejection, with the punches following complex paths along the turret. In actual production, issues such as guide rail wear, overloaded pressure rollers, frequent over‑load alarms, and gearbox oil leaks do not directly cause breakage but indirectly increase punch loading. Therefore, regular inspection of guide rail lubrication, proper adjustment of compression pressure, and timely replacement of worn parts are effective preventive measures.

To address punch breakage, we can provide custom‑made punches with high toughness and high wear resistance, based on your machine model and punch drawings. We select high‑quality tool steel and apply deep cryogenic treatment and coating reinforcement to ensure dimensional accuracy and smooth motion. Hansheng Automation supports manufacturing per customer prints and offers small‑batch quick delivery, helping you reduce fracture risks, extend tooling life, and maintain continuous and stable production. We also offer supporting services such as guide rail repair and pressure roller replacement. For inquiries, please feel free to contact us.
