A paper machine has two main groups: the main machine and auxiliary systems. The main machine handles sheet forming, dewatering, drying, surface treatment, and reeling. The auxiliary systems keep the machine running steadily. On modern high-speed machines, those auxiliary systems are not optional. They are part of the production core.

Main machine

The main machine follows the process flow through three modules: wet end, dry end, and reel.

Wet end

The wet end handles stock distribution, initial dewatering, and fiber forming. Sheet moisture is still high at this stage.

Headbox: Spreads stock evenly and injects it onto the forming wire. It controls basis weight and cross-direction uniformity.

Wire section: A forming wire, such as bronze or plastic mesh, filters water from the stock. Fibers interlace into a wet sheet. This section removes about 80% of the water.

Press section: Press rolls apply mechanical pressure to remove more water. This reduces drying energy and improves sheet density and surface flatness.

Dry end

The dry end lowers sheet moisture to the finished product standard. It also handles surface treatment and smoothness.

Dryer section: Multiple steam-heated dryer cylinders or a hot air hood evaporate remaining moisture. Sheet moisture drops to 5% to 10%.

Size press: Applies starch, synthetic size, or other agents to the sheet surface. This improves water resistance, strength, and printability.

Coater: Applies a pigment layer, such as calcium carbonate or kaolin, to improve gloss, smoothness, and printing result.

Calender: High-pressure rolls smooth the sheet. This reduces surface roughness and improves density and gloss.

For paper machine builders, Hansheng Automation can machine custom press rolls, dryer cylinder journals, bearing housings, doctor blades, and other wear parts from customer drawings, in single pieces or small batches.

Reel

Reeling is the last step in sheet forming. A rewinder or reel winds the dried and treated sheet into standard paper rolls for later slitting, packing, and transport.

Auxiliary systems

Auxiliary systems support stable operation. They include:

Vacuum system: Provides negative pressure for the wire and press sections. It speeds dewatering and improves efficiency.

Steam system: Supplies steam to the dryer section. It controls dryer cylinder temperature and keeps drying even and stable.

Lubrication system: Supplies oil to rotating parts, such as press rolls and dryer cylinder bearings. It reduces wear and failure rate.

Ventilation system: Removes hot, humid air from the workshop. It keeps the operating environment comfortable and helps prevent equipment corrosion.

Control system: Uses PLC or DCS to monitor and adjust machine parameters, such as speed, temperature, and pressure, for automated production.

Drive system: Drives machine sections in sync. It keeps sheet tension stable and production continuous.

How the main machine and auxiliary systems work together

Modern paper machines are highly integrated. The vacuum system must match the dewatering rate of the wire section to avoid sheet breaks. The steam system must adjust dryer cylinder temperature based on sheet basis weight to prevent over-drying or wasted energy. The control system must coordinate parameters in real time to keep sheet quality stable. This coordination makes auxiliary systems central to production efficiency and product quality.

Beyond paper machine components, our precision component customization covers more than one industry. We machine yacht precision components, RC car precision components, tobacco packaging machinery parts, filling machinery parts, printing machinery parts, food machinery parts, and medical device parts. Hansheng Automation works from customer drawings and delivers one-off or batch parts to the required material, tolerance, and surface finish. Our scope is precision components, not complete machines.
