A capacitor bank typically includes the following main equipment:
Capacitors
They provide capacitive load and are mainly used to compensate reactive power in the power system. This helps improve the power factor, reduce reactive current flow, lower line losses, and improve voltage quality.
Switching device
It connects or disconnects the capacitor bank according to system requirements, enabling dynamic reactive power compensation.
Reactor
Connected in series with the capacitors, the reactor forms a harmonic suppression or filtering circuit. It limits harmonic current generated by the capacitor bank, protects the capacitors and the power system from harmonic damage, and can also filter out some harmonics from the grid.
Controller
The controller automatically detects reactive power in the system and controls the switching device. Based on real-time reactive power demand, it decides when to connect or disconnect the capacitor bank, allowing automatic and intelligent reactive power compensation.
Surge arrester
It provides overvoltage protection. When the capacitor bank is subjected to lightning impulse or switching overvoltage, the surge arrester operates quickly to limit the overvoltage within a safe range and protect the capacitor bank from damage.
Main switch
It provides isolation. The main switch is used to isolate the capacitor bank from the power system for inspection, maintenance, or fault handling.
Branch switch
It protects individual capacitor branches and provides disconnection and fault clearing. When a branch fault occurs, the branch switch quickly isolates the faulty branch, preventing the fault from spreading and protecting the safe operation of the entire capacitor bank.
