Can planetary speed reducers withstand axial forces

Planetary gearboxes are key components in industrial machinery drive systems, used to reduce speed and increase torque output. The question of whether and how a planetary reducer can withstand axial forces is an important consideration in selection and design. In this paper, we will discuss the design and structure of planetary gearboxes and analyze their ability to withstand axial forces.

First, understand the basic structure of a precision planetary reducer. The planetary reducer consists of a sun wheel, multiple planetary wheels and an internal gear ring. The sun wheel is located in the center, and the planetary wheels rotate around the sun wheel and mesh with the internal gear ring. Different reduction ratios and torque outputs can be realized by changing the ratio of the number of teeth of the gears.

Under normal operating conditions, planetary gearboxes are primarily designed to withstand radial loads. The structure usually has sufficient strength and stiffness to cope with radial loads. However, for axial forces, the situation is different. Standard planetary gearboxes are not designed primarily to withstand axial forces.

Axial forces can originate from various factors in the drive train, such as axial partial forces from helical gear meshing, external loads, mounting errors, or shocks. Therefore, for applications where axial forces need to be accommodated, the construction of the planetary gearhead itself requires a special bearing support design to realize this capability.

At the heart of enabling planetary gearboxes to withstand axial forces is the design of the bearing system:

1. Critical Bearing Selection: The input and output shafts of planetary gearboxes are typically fitted with bearing types that can withstand both radial and axial forces, such as angular contact ball bearings or tapered roller bearings. These bearings have a specific contact angle design, which gives them an axial load carrying capacity.

2. Axial Load Carrying Capacity Parameters: Planetary gearboxes with special bearing designs can typically withstand axial forces up to 20-30% of the rated output torque. Exceeding this limit may result in premature bearing failure or structural damage.

3. Planetary Wheel Bearings: Planetary wheels are usually fitted with cylindrical roller bearings or needle roller bearings, which are mainly subjected to radial forces and make a limited contribution to the axial force carrying capacity. Axial forces are mainly carried by the bearings of the input/output shafts.

4. Gear Strength: The gears (sun wheel, planetary wheel, inner ring) are made of high-strength alloy steel and hardened to ensure that they are able to withstand the various stresses generated by meshing.

In addition to design, proper installation and maintenance are critical to ensure that planetary gearheads fulfill their axial load carrying capacity:

1. Accurate alignment: The gearhead must be mounted to the motor and load in such a way as to ensure precise shaft alignment. Any angular or offset errors will generate additional axial forces or moments not intended by the design, accelerating bearing wear and failure.

2. Firm fixing: The reducer housing must be firmly fixed on the base to prevent displacement due to reaction force during operation.

3. Regular maintenance: Check the bearing status, lubrication condition and fasteners regularly. Inadequate lubrication or contamination can significantly reduce bearing life and load carrying capacity. Any signs of looseness or wear should be addressed promptly.
