What is a Miter Gear?

Miter Gear

A miter gear is a specific type of bevel gear designed to transmit power between two intersecting shafts, most commonly at a 90‑degree angle, with an exact 1:1 gear ratio (both mating gears have the same number of teeth). Miter gears are generally available in straight‑tooth configuration for lower‑speed applications, and spiral‑tooth configuration for high‑speed, high‑torque, and low‑noise power transmission.

At Hansheng Automation, we specialize in custom‑manufacturing high‑precision miter gears strictly in accordance with your CAD drawings (2D/3D) or physical samples. Our process ensures the required backlash – whether standard, low, or zero.

How We Manufacture Custom Miter Gears (Case Study: 20CrMnTi Spiral Miter Gear)

The following is Hansheng Automation's internal production process for manufacturing custom miter gears using 20CrMnTi alloy steel.

1

Material Selection & Cutting
We begin by sourcing premium 20CrMnTi steel bars. The raw material is cut into blanks using our automated band saws, ensuring sufficient stock allowance for subsequent machining.

2

Forging & Normalizing
To refine the internal grain structure and improve the mechanical properties of the steel, the blanks are forged. A normalizing (with optional high‑temperature tempering) heat treatment is then applied to homogenize the microstructure and optimize machinability for the subsequent cutting operations.

3

CNC Rough & Semi‑Finish Turning
The blanks are loaded onto our high‑precision CNC lathes. We machine the outer diameter, inner bore, and mounting faces to precise tolerances, leaving exactly the right amount of allowance for gear tooth cutting and final grinding.

4

Gear Cutting – Spiral Bevel Generating
For spiral miter gears, we utilize specialized spiral bevel gear generators (Gleason / Klingelnberg type) employing face‑milling or face‑hobbing processes. The teeth are precisely cut to the required module and tooth profile, establishing the exact 1:1 ratio and 90° shaft angle.

5

Heat Treatment – Carburizing, Quenching & Tempering
This is a critical step for 20CrMnTi gears. The gears undergo carburizing and quenching to achieve a surface hardness of HRC 58–62 for excellent wear resistance, while maintaining a tough, shock‑absorbing core (HRC 30–45). A low‑temperature tempering cycle follows to relieve residual stresses.

6

Hard Turning & Inner Bore Precision Grinding
After heat treatment, the gear is remounted. We perform hard turning followed by precision grinding of the inner bore and locating faces to ensure perfect concentricity and tight shaft‑fit tolerances. This finished bore then serves as the reference datum for the final tooth finishing operation.

7

Gear Grinding (Final Tooth Finishing)
To eliminate any micro‑distortions caused by heat treatment and to achieve ISO/DIN Grade 6 precision, the gear teeth are finely ground using high‑precision bevel gear grinding machines. This ensures smooth meshing, minimal backlash, and ultra‑low noise operation. (For non‑hardened gears, lapping in pairs is available as an alternative – but grinding is our standard for hardened 20CrMnTi gears.)

8

Inspection – CMM & Gear Measuring Center
Every batch of custom miter gears undergoes strict quality control. We use a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) to verify mounting dimensions and runout, and a dedicated Gear Measuring Center to check tooth profile, lead angle, pitch error, and surface finish.

9

Surface Treatment & Secure Packaging
Finally, the gears receive a non‑film‑forming anti‑rust treatment (e.g., black oxide, or custom coatings as specified) to protect against corrosion without affecting critical dimensions. They are then carefully packaged in moisture‑proof, shock‑resistant containers to ensure safe delivery during international shipping.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between a Bevel Gear and a Miter Gear?

A: While all miter gears are a sub-type of bevel gears, not all bevel gears are miter gears. Miter gears specifically operate at a strict 1:1 gear ratio and intersect at exactly a 90-degree angle. Standard bevel gears, however, can be designed for various transmission ratios (e.g., 2:1, 3:1) and different shaft angles.

Q: Can you manufacture custom Miter Gears based on my CAD drawings?

A: Yes, Hansheng Automation specializes in OEM and custom gear manufacturing. You can send us your 2D drawings (PDF, DWG) or 3D models (STEP, IGES). We are also happy to sign an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) to protect your intellectual property before you share any confidential designs.

Q: Do you supply Miter Gears individually or in matched pairs?

A: We strongly recommend manufacturing and purchasing miter gears in matched pairs (sets). Because high-precision gears are often lapped or ground together during final production, a matched set ensures perfect meshing, zero binding, and minimal wear.

Q: What is your Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)? Do you accept sample/prototype orders?

A: We offer flexible manufacturing solutions. We gladly accept small-batch prototype orders for your testing and validation, as well as large-volume mass production runs. Feel free to contact our engineering team to discuss your specific project needs.
