What factors do I need to consider when choosing a Planetary Gear Unit?

 

Requests for torque

 

For different industrial applications, torque requirements differ rather significantly. From its reduction ratio, the torque output capacity of a planetary gear unit results. When heavy loads, such cranes, heavy industrial robots, etc., need to be driven, a planetary gear unit with high torque output has to be selected. One can select the appropriate product by computing the required output torque and using the planetary gear unit reduction ratio formula (output torque = input torque × reduction ratio).


If an application requires an output torque of 1000N・m and the motor input torque is 100N・m, then at least 10:1 a planetary gear unit must be selected.

 

Needs for speed

 

Among speed factors are output and input speed. Choose the planetary gear unit depending on the final speed needed by the equipment and the motor speed in the real use. While selecting a suitable reduction ratio to lower the speed and increase the torque, some equipment that requires low speed and high torque, such mixers, must make sure the planetary gear unit can provide a sufficiently high output speed while meeting the torque requirements; and for some equipment that requires high speed, such high-speed centrifuges, it is necessary to make sure the planetary gear unit can meet the torque requirements.

 

A planetary gear unit with a 10:1 reduction ratio should be chosen if the motor speed is 3000 rpm and the equipment requires an output speed of 300 rpm.

 

Precise criteria

 

Transmission accuracy of the planetary gear unit is critical in precision equipment including optical instrument focusing systems, high-precision machine tools, etc. Angle transmission accuracy and return error constitute part of transmission accuracy. High gear manufacturing accuracy and small clearance during meshing of highly precise planetary gear units help to provide exact motion control.


In CNC grinders, the angle transmission accuracy of the planetary gear unit must be within ±0.01° and the return error must be rather small to guarantee the exact movement of the grinder spindle, so ensuring the machining accuracy of workpieces.

 

Limited space

 

Although the planetary gear unit is small in structure, different application situations call for different sized requirements. Selecting a small planetary gear unit is essential in some equipment with limited space, such small robot joints, internal transmission systems of aircraft equipment, etc., etc. One should take into account the dimensional parameters of the planetary gear unit, including its length and outer diameter, to make sure it may be placed in the designated equipment position.


Due to the limited space of the hand, the design of the hand joint of the humanoid service robot requires the selection of a small planetary gear unit; hence, the unit should be able to supply sufficient power to drive the finger movement in a limited space.

 

Financial considerations

 

Variations in planetary gear unit price depend on brand, accuracy, and torque capacity. Considering the application criteria, the cost has to be taken into whole account. Large-scale production machinery especially depends on cost control. But low-quality goods cannot be chosen only to cut expenses; else, issues including frequent equipment maintenance and shortened service life may follow.


Although the fundamental torque, speed, and accuracy requirements are satisfied in the conveyor belt drive system on a standard automated production line, a planetary gear unit with high cost performance can be chosen to lower the general equipment cost.
