According to Bloomberg, TSMC has started construction of its first wafer fab in Dresden, Germany, and plans to build more factories in Europe in the future, targeting different market sectors, focusing on the AI chip market to further expand its global business footprint.
TSMC said in a statement that it is currently focused on ongoing global expansion projects and has no new investment plans for the time being.
In August this year, TSMC launched a chip manufacturing plant construction project worth 10 billion euros (IT home note: currently about 77.344 billion yuan) in Dresden, Germany, which is its first factory in the European Union. About half of the project funding will be subsidized by the local government and is scheduled to start production by the end of 2027.
According to the report, the AI market (such as Nvidia, AMD-related chips) will become the most important growth area, and other semiconductor companies with unique designs may also bring new opportunities for TSMC. According to local officials in Taiwan, TSMC may have more factories ready for the European market, and the company is planning for several factories in the future. "TSMC also needs to evaluate whether to continue to expand in Dresden or build factories in other parts of the EU."
