On January 17, 2022, Tongji University released the first domestically developed intelligent needle free vaccine injection robot.

The Qi Peng team from Tongji University has applied the world's leading human 3D model recognition algorithm and adaptive robot technology, combined with the design of mechatronics needle free injectors, and jointly developed a fully automatic needle free vaccine injection robot with multiple technology companies and the Chinese Cardiovascular Doctors Innovation Club (CCI), which can automatically identify the designated vaccine injection position on the human body.

Firstly, the automatic vaccine injection robot uses a simple 3D point cloud camera to capture images of the human body, quickly and automatically fitting a 3D model of the corresponding body parts, accurately identifying the vaccine injection site and angle.

At the same time, the seven axis force controlled adaptive robotic arm has high-precision and fast response force control performance. By applying high-precision force control fitting algorithm, it can ensure that the end of the syringe is vertically and tightly attached to the injection site, improve injection effect, and reduce pain experience.

Then, the needle free injection part of the robot can use a high-pressure water column to push the medication through an extremely fine nozzle, forming a jet that passes through the skin at high speed and directly enters the treatment site. The medication tube is sterile and disposable, and is discarded after injection to ensure safe use.

For the hospital application scenario of vaccine injection, the current robot injection system adopts pneumatic drive technology, which has the advantage of being suitable for rapid continuous injection. The closer the injector head is to the skin surface and the more perpendicular the contact angle, the better the injection effect and the less pain.

According to experts, this robot can be used in hospitals, communities, vaccination vehicles, and other scenarios in the future.
