In July 2025, German electric assist system manufacturer TQ announced the launch of its next-generation mid-drive motor, the HPR40, which sets new global records for lightweight design and efficiency with its ultra-lightweight 1.17kg weight and 200W peak power output. Designed specifically for road and gravel bicycles, the motor incorporates innovative "harmonic pinion drive" technology, replacing traditional bottom bracket structures to achieve silent operation, low friction loss, and zero-delay startup. While delivering 40Nm of torque, it prioritizes a natural riding experience and seamless integration with the bike frame.
The HPR40's integrated solution is a benchmark in industrial design: the motor is embedded in the bottom bracket, control components are hidden inside the handlebar, and it is paired with a 290Wh (1.46kg) downtube battery and a 160Wh "water bottle-style" expansion battery, keeping the entire e-assist system weight under 2.7kg. Its high torque density capability doubles the rider's pedaling power, enabling "seamless intervention" in uphill assistance and extended range. Currently, this motor is applied to Canyon's new Endurace:onFly electric road bike, enabling the entire vehicle to achieve a weight of 9.9 kg while balancing aerodynamic design and electric assist performance.
"We are not pursuing mere power enhancement; instead, we aim to make electric assistance an extension of the rider's natural instincts," said a TQ representative. The HPR40 breaks through the industry bottleneck of "power and lightweight design being mutually exclusive" through technological innovation, setting a new benchmark for the high-end electric-assisted bicycle market.
