Working Principle of Pharmaceutical Tablet Presses

The core task of a tablet press is to compress granulated drug materials into uniform tablets by mechanical force. Main types are single‑punch and rotary presses. They share a common four‑step cycle, but differ greatly in output. Hansheng Automation provides precision custom parts for each key station to ensure stable performance across all production scales.

1. Common Four‑Step Cycle

Feeding: Granules in the hopper are evenly filled into the die bore via vibration or scraper; excess is scraped off for consistent fill volume.
Customization: We can tailor scraper angles, hopper outlet sizes, or anti‑bridging agitators for sticky or poor‑flow materials.

Fill‑depth adjustment: Lower punch position sets the cavity volume, thus tablet weight.
Customization: We supply adjustable lower‑punch limit blocks or fine‑tuning screws with high‑resolution scales for easy weight control within ±2%.

Compression: Upper punch descends into the die; together with the lower punch, it applies stable pressure to form dense tablets. Pressure is adjustable via hydraulics, springs, or cam profiles.
Customization: For brittle, viscoelastic, or hard materials, we provide custom punch tip curvatures, carbide die rings, and dedicated pressure pads to improve hardness and disintegration consistency.

Ejection: Upper punch retracts; lower punch pushes the tablet out; a scraper directs it to the collection chute.
Customization: We offer wear‑resistant coatings (e.g., WC spray) on ejector scrapers and optimize their angles to reduce edge chipping and surface scratches.

2. Differences Between the Two Main Types

Single‑punch press: One set of tooling; one tablet per stroke. Pressure: 0–60 kN; output: ~30–60 tablets/min. Use: labs, small batches, hospital pharmacies.
Hansheng Automation supplies complete precision dies (including shaped, engraved, multi‑layer) and mini hopper adapters for quick changeovers.

Rotary press: Multiple tooling sets on a rotating turret; each revolution completes all steps for all stations. Output: 100k–1M tablets/hour; pressure up to >100 kN. Use: large‑scale commercial production.
For rotary presses, we offer turret balancing, punch guide bushings, die holders, pre‑ and main‑roller assemblies-in bearing steel, PM steel, or ceramics-for high‑speed, heavy‑duty service.

3. Safety & Maintenance

Never reach into the tooling or turret area during operation. Always disconnect power and follow LOTO procedures before changing dies or cleaning. Regularly inspect hydraulic seals, lubrication lines, and pressure sensors to prevent pressure anomalies and reject spikes. Hansheng Automation provides custom safety guards, quick‑change tools, and durable seals to reduce downtime and human error.
