Robotic arms fall into two main types: articulated arms and Cartesian arms.

Articulated robotic arm

An articulated arm, also called an articulated robot, is the most common type. Its design comes from the human arm and finger joints. It consists of multiple connected joints. Each joint has a drive unit, usually an electric motor or hydraulic device, to produce complex motion. The advantage is flexibility and a large working range. It can move freely in three-dimensional space and perform fine operations. In automotive manufacturing, articulated arms are widely used for welding, assembly, and painting.

Cartesian robotic arm

A Cartesian arm, also called a Cartesian robot or linear robot, is another common type. It consists of three mutually perpendicular linear axes, usually driven by electric motors or pneumatic devices. The advantage is high accuracy and repeatability. It suits applications that need precise position and speed control. Its structure is also relatively simple, which makes maintenance and programming easier. In the electronics industry, Cartesian arms are often used in semiconductor manufacturing and circuit board assembly, where high-precision operation is required.

Choosing between them

Articulated arms are known for flexibility and a wide working range. Cartesian arms are favored for accuracy and repeatability. The choice depends on the specific application requirements and working environment.

For robot arm builders, Hansheng Automation machines joint housings, linear axis mounts, and other precision parts from customer drawings. Single-piece and small-batch orders are supported.
