1. Screen Printing Machines – The Mainstay for Flat and Regular Curved Surfaces
Principle: Ink is forced through the open mesh of a screen stencil by a squeegee, directly depositing the pattern onto the substrate.
Typical Applications: Suitable for relatively large, flat, or evenly curved surfaces – e.g., brand logos on electronic housings, colorful patterns on plastic toys, metal nameplates, ceramic mug decorations, and textile prints.
Compatible Materials: Plastics, metals, glass, ceramics, paper, fabrics, and many more.
Characteristics: Thick ink layer with strong opacity, high colour saturation, and a tactile, dimensional effect. Particularly effective when high coverage (e.g., white ink on dark substrates) is required. Screen making is relatively cost‑effective for medium to large production runs.
2. Pad Printing Machines – The Expert for Fine Printing on Complex Curved Surfaces
Principle: A pattern is etched or engraved as cavities into a steel (or resin) plate. Ink is filled into these cavities, the excess is wiped off, and a silicone pad picks up the ink from the cavities, then transfers and presses it onto the workpiece. The soft pad deforms to conform to irregular surfaces.
Typical Applications: Specialised for small, irregular, or highly curved items – e.g., branding on pen barrels, miniature decorations on cosmetic bottle caps, symbols on automotive dashboard buttons, characters on remote controls, and scale markings on medical devices.
Compatible Materials: Rigid curved materials such as ABS, PC, metal alloys, coated surfaces, and workpieces with slight surface unevenness.
Characteristics: Capable of printing fine lines as narrow as 0.1 mm, and supports multi‑colour registration (by sequential printing with multiple pad heads). However, the ink film is relatively thin, making it more suitable for decorative and identification purposes rather than high‑opacity coverage.
3. Selection Guidelines
If the workpiece has a large printing area, a flat or regularly curved surface, and requires a thick, vibrant ink layer, screen printing is generally more efficient and cost‑effective.
If the workpiece is small, has complex curvature or uneven features, and demands fine detail with precise multi‑colour registration, pad printing offers irreplaceable adaptability.
In practice, both processes are often used together – for example, the main body colour of a mobile phone housing may be screen‑printed, while the side buttons are pad‑printed with symbols. For maintenance and repair of such equipment, non‑standard parts – such as squeegee holders, pad adapters, ink cup seals, etc. – can be precisely custom‑machined according to actual mounting dimensions or provided drawings, ensuring a perfect fit for various machine models.
