R, B, and Y are abbreviations. They are used to classify industrial robot arm motion. Robot arms can be classified by degrees of freedom or by drive method. This question refers to the first method.

  • R joint: Roll. It provides roll rotation.
  • B joint: Bend. It provides bending or folding.
  • Y joint: Yaw. It provides yaw deflection.

These three joint motions let the robot arm rotate in three directions in space.

There are also two basic joint types based on joint pair:

  • Prismatic joint (P joint): also called a sliding pair. It allows a link to move in a straight line.
  • Revolute joint (R joint): also called a rotating pair. It allows a link to rotate.

Here the R in revolute joint is not the same as the R in roll joint. The first describes the joint type. The second describes the direction of rotation.

For robot arm builders, Hansheng Automation machines joint housings, arm links, and mounting parts from customer drawings. Single-piece and small-batch orders are supported.
