The three main types of industrial robot reducers and their applications

Modern production relies much on industrial robots, which also rely mostly on the kind of reducer utilized in performance. Three primary kind of reducers utilized in industrial robots are now planetary gearboxes, harmonic drives, and helical gear reducers.

The special internal and external gear construction of planetary gearboxes is well-known; the internal gears are fastened to the output shaft and the exterior gears are coupled to the motor shaft. This design enables a great reduction ratio and lets the planetary gearbox show rather excellent smoothness in transmitted torque. Often utilized in the joints of industrial robots to guarantee that the robot can conduct many complicated motions precisely and reliably, planetary gearboxes are driven by their small size and steady torque output.

Mostly consisting of flexible disc and stiff gear, the harmonic drive follows the harmonic vibrational idea. Deceleration occurs from the flexible disc's deformation driving the gears to twist while the motor shaft rotates. Particularly appropriate for robot end effectors requiring great precision and high torque output, including welding, assembly and other high-precision activities, harmonic drive is well-known for its great transmission accuracy, compact size and long life.

Simple construction and effective transmission efficiency of helical gear reducers make them preferred. This reducer produces a significant torque output by use of helical gears combined. Usually installed on the base and arm of the robot, helical gear reducers are used to give continuous and robust power assistance for the robot thanks to their steady and dependability.
