Material Selection Strategy for Gearbox Gears and Shafts

The transmission performance and service life of a gearbox primarily depend on the compatibility of the materials used for the gears and shafts. Due to their different functions, the material requirements for gears and shafts vary significantly:

1. Shaft Materials: Emphasizing Strength and Toughness, with Excellent Torsional Resistance and Impact Resistance

Shafts must transmit torque and withstand bending moments, requiring high strength, high toughness (impact resistance), and good hardenability.

Common materials: 35CrMo, 42CrMo (quenched and tempered steel).

Comparison and selection:

42CrMo has higher tensile strength (≤1100 MPa) and better hardenability than 35CrMo, making it easier to manufacture large-sized, high-load shafts (such as output shafts), and its cost is comparable, making it the preferred choice for shaft materials.

2. Gear Materials: Wear Resistance and Fatigue Resistance, Balancing Surface and Core Properties

When gears mesh, the tooth surfaces must be wear-resistant (high hardness), while the tooth roots must resist fatigue fracture (high toughness), relying on carburized steel (surface carburizing and quenching, with a strong and tough core).

Traditional solution: 20CrMnMo (tooth surface hardness 54–58 HRC after carburizing, core hardness 33–38 HRC).
Upgraded options: 20CrNi2Mo, 17CrNiMo6 (high-performance carburized steel).

Advantages of 17CrNiMo6:

Alloy elements (Cr/Mo enhance carburization efficiency and hardenability, Ni optimizes toughness) work synergistically, resulting in bending strength over 200 MPa higher than 20CrNi2Mo;

Wide heat treatment window, easy cost control, suitable for high-speed, heavy-load, and high-precision applications.

3.Selection Logic: Balancing Performance and Cost

Shafts: Prioritize 42CrMo (better performance, controllable cost);
Gears: Choose 17CrNiMo6 for high-end applications (significant mechanical performance and heat treatment advantages), and use 20CrMnMo for conventional conditions.

Precise material matching is the core pillar for enhancing the reliability and extending the service life of reducers.
