A can seaming machine, as the name suggests, is a machine that seals the opening of a can. It is commonly categorized by can material: tin cans, paper cans, aluminum cans, pressure cans, and others. By lid type, it can be divided into easy-open cans, tinplate cans, and similar types. By shape, there are round cans, square cans, and easy-open cans. Because lid types vary, can seaming machines also come in many forms, generally including general-purpose seamers, square can seamers, and irregular-shape seamers. As food, pharmaceutical, and daily chemical industries raise shelf-life requirements, vacuum can seamers and vacuum nitrogen-flushing can seamers have also appeared. By automation level, can seamers are divided into semi-automatic and fully automatic machines. By application, they include milk powder can seamers, plastic bottle seamers, and tin can seamers.
Semi-Automatic Can Seaming Machines
Semi-automatic can seamers generally include manual lever types, pneumatic types, and electric types. They are usually suitable for small factories, single-piece production, and small-batch production.
a. Manual Lever Can Seamer
The manual lever can seamer is currently one of the most widely used semi-automatic seamers. Because of stable mechanical quality and easy adjustment, it is widely used by small factories, workshops, and retail shops.
Its seaming principle is simple. It uses two rolls for folding and pressing. The first roll is the curling roll, and the second roll is the tightening roll. It is generally used for cans that do not require vacuum or gas flushing.
Working principle:
Place the can with lid onto the bottom support.
Step on the foot pedal to press the can tightly against the upper pressing die.
Move the handle so the first and second rolls quickly curl and tighten the lid edge.
Release the foot pedal and output the finished can.
b. Pneumatic Can Seamer
This model is slightly more automated than the manual lever type. Two cylinders replace the manual lever and foot pedal.
Working principle:
Place the can with lid onto the bottom support.
Step on the foot switch. The bottom support cylinder presses the can tightly against the upper pressing die.
The swing arm cylinder moves, causing the first and second rolls to quickly curl and tighten the lid edge.
Output the finished can.
c. Electric Can Seamer
The electric can seamer differs from manual and pneumatic types in that the first and second rolls are mounted on both sides of the pressing die.
Working principle:
Place the can with lid onto the bottom support.
Step on the foot switch or use a can sensing switch, depending on the manufacturer. The bottom support is driven by a motor cam to press the can tightly against the upper pressing die.
Under the action of the side swing arm cam, the first roll first presses and curls the lid edge. After the cam rotates half a turn, the second roll swing arm begins to press and tighten.
Output the finished can.
The models described above are popular semi-automatic can seamers in China. Their average seaming speed is generally 15–30 cans per minute. Because of low cost, moderate technical content, and stable quality, many individuals and companies use these models. Their disadvantage is that they are not suitable for large-batch automated production lines.
For can seamer builders and maintenance teams, Hansheng Automation can machine custom non-standard parts from customer drawings-such as seaming rolls, chuck plates, bottom supports, swing arm components, and changeover fixtures-in single pieces or small batches.
Fully Automatic Can Seaming Machines
Fully automatic can seamers are generally used in automated production lines and high-volume production lines. Because early models were developed from drilling machines, many domestic can seamers are still large and heavy. Due to higher cost, higher output, and higher technical content, they are favored by large enterprises.
a. Fully Automatic Can Seamer
This model is mainly used for automatic can lid sealing. Production speed is generally 50–200 cans per minute.
Working principle:
Cans flow from the upstream filling machine to the can seamer.
A six-fork star wheel rotates and brings the cans into the seamer. Cans are automatically lidded by the automatic lid dropper.
The six-fork star wheel continues to the next station, where the first seaming roll begins pre-seaming.
The six-fork star wheel continues to the next station, where the second seaming roll tightens the seam.
Output the finished can.
b. Fully Automatic Vacuum Nitrogen-Flushing Can Seamer
This model is mainly used for vacuuming, nitrogen flushing, and sealing cans. Production speed is generally 9–20 cans per minute.
Working principle:
Cans filled by the filling machine flow onto the seamer turntable.
The lid dropper automatically places lids.
The turntable rotates to the first roll for pre-seaming.
The can enters the vacuum chamber for vacuuming.
Through control of the vacuum suction switching valve, nitrogen enters the vacuum chamber and is drawn into the can.
The can with nitrogen enters the second roll for tightening and sealing.
Output the finished can.
Irregular and Square Can Seaming Machines
Irregular and square can seamers are not discussed in depth here because these models are mostly customized according to product shape. They generally use spring pressure for pre-seaming and final seaming. Other parts are similar to those of standard can seamers.
The above is only a brief introduction. Different manufacturers may use different working principles. For specific details, contact the relevant manufacturer.
