Why Can Thermal Imagers Detect Gas Leaks

Oct 15, 2024 Leave a message

When gas leaks, it absorbs specific bands of infrared radiation (gas infrared absorption characteristic peaks). Due to the difference in infrared radiation characteristics between the leaked gas and the surrounding environment, this difference will form a significant infrared radiation difference under the detection of an infrared thermal imager. The infrared thermal imager utilizes this principle to accurately identify leaked gas and its location by capturing and analyzing this infrared radiation difference.

Infrared thermal imagers are usually equipped with selective narrowband window designs (filters) in gas detection, which can detect and image the infrared absorption characteristic peaks of specific gases. For example, for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the response band is set between 3.2-3.4 μ m.

After image filtering and gas enhancement image algorithm processing, gas leakage can be displayed in real-time and intuitively through thermal images.
