Splines are everywhere. Gearboxes use them. Machine spindles use them. So do ag equipment, pumps, and robot joints. Every time a shaft has to hand torque to a hub without slipping, a spline is doing the job. And yet, when engineers start shopping for spline cutting services, most stall at the same place. What do I actually put on the drawing? Who cuts this thing right? It is simpler than it looks. There are five ways to cut a spline, and there are five numbers you need to hand over. Get those two things straight and the whole process stops being a mystery.
Start with what a spline is. It is a set of teeth cut around a shaft, or inside a bore, that locks a hub to the shaft so both spin as one. It beats a key and keyway because the load spreads across many teeth instead of one flat key. External splines go on the outside of a shaft. Internal splines go inside a hub or a bore. Plenty of shops do one side well and fumble the other, so write down which one you need before you call anyone.
Then name the tooth form, because that alone changes the price. You will meet three families. Involute splines, with the curved gear-like tooth profile, are the default for power transmission and they self-center when assembled. Straight-sided splines use flat rectangular teeth, they measure easily and show up all over ag and heavy equipment. Serrations are small triangular teeth for light torque and adjustment work, think steering columns. Now the five methods. Number one is hobbing. A hob is a screw-shaped cutter that rolls along the shaft and generates the spline in one continuous pass. Number two is shaping. A shaper runs a pinion-style cutter up and down while the work feeds past. Number three is power skiving, and it has quietly changed the internal spline game. A skiving cutter spins on an angled axis and basically peels the teeth off in a single pass, so it crushes shaping on speed for internal work.
