The Chinese space station recently received a group of special "guests". They are not humans, but experimental samples with scientific research missions. Under the careful escort of the Shenzhou 18 spacecraft, these samples successfully arrived on the ground in the early hours of the morning, marking another important step for China in space science research.
It is reported that there are 55 types of experimental samples returned this time, with a total weight of about 34.6 kg, covering three major research fields of space life science, space material science and microgravity combustion science. In particular, samples in the field of life sciences, including 24 biological samples such as zebrafish culture fluid and various microorganisms, their space journey will provide important clues for scientists to uncover the mystery of life in extreme environments.
With the opening of the hatch of the Shenzhou 18 spacecraft, these precious biological samples were quickly sent to the Space Application Engineering and Technology Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. There, scientists conducted preliminary inspections and confirmations on the samples and prepared for more in-depth research.

In the field of life sciences, researchers will use advanced technologies such as metagenomic sequencing to explore the material circulation mechanism of aquatic ecosystems in space environments and the impact of microgravity on the molecular basis of life. At the same time, research on anaerobic archaea and extreme environment microorganisms will also provide important basis for assessing the possibility of life in outer space.
Material samples have also attracted widespread attention. 30 materials such as high-temperature refractory niobium alloys and bioactive glass that have experienced a space journey will be subject to detailed testing by scientists. By analyzing the performance changes of these materials in a microgravity environment, scientists are expected to provide new ideas for the research and development of high-tech products such as the next generation of aviation engines and space fiber lasers.
The study of combustion samples is also of great significance. Scientists will conduct in-depth analysis of nanoparticle materials based on methane combustion synthesis to reveal the mechanism of gravity's influence on each link in the gas phase combustion synthesis process. This research is expected to lay the foundation for the synthesis technology of key granular materials in extraterrestrial environments.
The successful return of the space science experiment samples not only marks a new milestone in China's space science exploration, but also provides domestic and foreign scientists with a broader research perspective and precious experimental data.
