The updated version of the international standard ISO 3691-4 for automated guided vehicle systems was released in June 2023.
What is ISO 3691-4?
ISO 3691-4, Industrial Trucks - Safety Requirements and Verification - Part 4: Unmanned Industrial Trucks and Their Systems "is the most important international standard for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Vehicle Systems (AGVs). This standard was released in 2020 and is applicable to manufacturers and operators. It defines the requirements (performance levels) for AGV and AGVS safety functions, such as personnel detection settings, operating modes, and braking systems. It also describes procedures for reducing risks and verifying automation functions to ensure smooth and safe operation of AGVs and AGVs in the final installation environment.

Main changes in manufacturers and operators
The updated version of standard ISO 3691-4 was released in June 2023. It is necessary to update the standard in order to adapt to the latest technological level and define various requirements more clearly.
The following are some topics that have been defined more clearly or expanded in the updated version:
Detailed requirements for "active detection area" and "operation stop"
More precisely defined the 'stop function', including the maximum distance between emergency stop devices
Updated requirements for passenger access and protection on AGVs
Better align with the electrical requirements of EN 1175:2020
Described additional hazards such as transportation, temperature, emissions, static electricity, etc.
The current version of ISO 3691-4 also describes the framework conditions that must be applied to allow the system to operate at higher speeds within the so-called 'restricted zone'. In this situation, it is necessary to conduct a detailed analysis and assessment of the danger, and take corresponding additional measures.
