Recently, the surgical team of Professor Deng Youwen of the Department of Spine Surgery of the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University successfully carried out the first remote orthopedic robot surgery in Hunan Province by using the domestic "TiRobot" robot and connecting with the Robot Remote Surgery Center of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital in real time through 5G communication technology.

This is another breakthrough in the application of orthopedic robotic surgery after the completion of the first "TiRobot" robot-assisted congenital scoliosis orthopedic surgery in Hunan Province.

The remote orthopedic robotic surgery was performed by a male patient with a multi-level burst fracture of the lumbar vertebrae due to a fall from a height, especially the L1 vertebrae. Movement of the fracture fragment into the spinal canal caused spinal cord compression, but fortunately the patient had no obvious signs of spinal cord injury.

In order to solve the patient's pain more minimally invasive and safer, after discussion with Director Deng Youwen's surgical team and communication with Director Zhao Jingwei of Beijing Jishuitan, it was decided to adopt the plan of "collaboration between the two places and remote robot diagnosis and treatment", and the Department of Spine Surgery of the Third Xiangya Hospital and the Robotic Remote Surgery Center of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital will carry out remote surgery through 5G communication technology combined with robots.

On the day of the operation, the surgical team of the Third Xiangya Hospital, composed of Director Deng Youwen, Director Li Zhiyue, Attending Physician Tan Wei and Chief Resident Physician Liu Renfeng, communicated with Director Zhao Jingwei and his team at the Robotic Remote Surgery Center of Jishuitan Hospital in real time. Through the sincere cooperation of the two teams, the operation was carried out smoothly, and the patient woke up from anesthesia and felt that the pain symptoms were significantly relieved, and there was no sign of nerve damage in the examination.

With the development of communication technology and surgical robots, especially the rise of Internet medical care and intelligent medical care, high-quality medical resources have been rearranged through the Internet, and the health security model of the people has been further improved on this basis. In recent years, remote surgery has gradually become one of the hot applications in the medical field for the exploration of high-tech, high-efficiency, high-quality and new quality productivity.

It is foreseeable that remote surgical robot diagnosis and treatment will become the norm in the future, but as a new type of diagnosis and treatment mode, there are four clinical problems in the remote diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic robots, such as non-standard diagnosis and treatment paths, immature remote platforms, incomplete evaluation methods and unreasonable team construction.

In order to study and formulate relevant technical standards and norms, and ensure the standardization of the clinical application of orthopedic robot remote diagnosis and treatment technology, Professor Wang Junqiang of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital led the national key research and development project "Construction and Application Demonstration of Robot Remote Diagnosis and Treatment System".
