ABB introduces the ChloroStar™ range of sensors, transmitters and accessories for accurate and reliable residual chlorine measurement and analysis, enabling users in the water, wastewater and other industries to more effectively control residual chlorine, improve water treatment capacity and ensure long-term stable process operation.
Removing potential pathogens that pose a public health risk is critical to both drinking water quality and wastewater treatment, so chlorination in utility and industrial applications is strictly regulated. Until now, measuring and analyzing residual chlorine has been a challenge, with many sensor technologies requiring time-consuming maintenance to address issues such as scaling and drift that affect sensor performance.
The ChloroStar™ range of residual chlorine analyzers solves this problem. With self-cleaning and rugged sensors, modular mounting, predictive maintenance and diagnostics, the ChloroStar™ range makes accurate measurements faster and easier than ever before, while increasing uptime in chlorine disinfectant dosing processes and reducing sensor maintenance costs.
Nikodem Siwek, Global Product Manager for Continuous Water Analyzers at ABB's Measurement & Analysis business, said: "Accurate and effective chlorination is key to the safe and efficient treatment of drinking water and wastewater, so the stable availability of the measurement equipment is a crucial requirement. The new ChloroStar™ family of products enables users to guarantee the availability and reliability of residual chlorine measurement while reducing maintenance efforts."
ChloroStar™ consists of two parts: the ChloroStar™ digital sensor and the ChloroStar™ Cell sensor.

The ChloroStar™ digital sensor is an intelligent three-electrode sensor for measuring free residual chlorine or total chlorine. The sensor has built-in diagnostic functions, pH compensation functions and EZLink™ connection technology to reduce drift and improve accuracy. At the same time, the membrane cover design reduces the number of cleanings and does not require additional buffer. The modular flow cell structure designed by ABB can provide stable residual chlorine measurement and is not affected by changes in water sample flow. The measurement water consumption as low as 1 liter/hour (16.67 ml/minute) makes it ideal for drinking water treatment, tap water network or closed-loop system applications.

The ChloroStar™ Cell is a fast-responding, direct, open-cell electrode with self-cleaning technology for measuring disinfectants such as residual chlorine and chlorine dioxide. Its innovative open-cell design uses water flow to continuously clean the electrode, avoiding the clogging and plugging issues that affect other types of sensors. The device also reduces operating expenses by reducing consumable costs by 20% compared to traditional solutions.
At the same time, this design also ensures high sensitivity and long-term reliable use even in high-fouling applications such as municipal and industrial wastewater.
Higher performance can be achieved by combining the ChloroStar™ series with other technologies in ABB's continuous water quality portfolio.
The ChloroStar™ sensor can be used with ABB's versatile AWT420 dual-channel transmitter to measure multiple parameters with a single device. The AWT420 can be mixed and matched with traditional analog or intelligent digital EZLink™ sensors, allowing users to create a customized water analysis system based on specific needs. Features such as dynamic QR code assistance, dual sensor verification, dual PID control and automatic pH correction provide reliable control for disinfection measurements.
The EZLink™ Connect app allows easy access to important chlorine sensor information via mobile devices. Data is transferred to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to quickly view and share measurement and audit data, and track the status of maintenance tasks.
The portable EZTest 100 chlorine colorimeter allows fast and accurate analysis of process samples on site, using the standard DPD colorimetric method. The EZTest 100 is lightweight, rugged, and waterproof, while the EZTest 10 comes with a rugged carrying case and related measurement key accessories for easy use at any time.
