The term "harmonic drive" originates from its operation as a harmonic reducer. Inside the flexspline, a wave generator is fixed at a length greater than the diameter of the undeformed flexspline's inner circle. This causes the flexspline to undergo elastic deformation, becoming elliptical. Consequently, the gear teeth of the flexspline along the long axis engage with the tooth grooves of the rigid wheel, ensuring they mesh. Meanwhile, the teeth on the short axis of both wheels remain completely disengaged throughout this engagement and disengagement process. Thus, the system remains either in an engaged or disengaged state during operation.
