How Zero-backlash Harmonic Drive work?

 

A flex spline-a flexible, thin-walled cup-shaped gear-a wave generator-usually an elliptical cam-and a circle spline-a stiff, externally toothed ring define the fundamental mechanism of a Harmonic Drive. These elements cooperate in the following sense:

The wave generator is an oval-shaped or elliptical cam inserted into the flexline. The flex-spline deforms into an oval form when the wave generator turns.

The flexspline is the component that deforms under wave generator influence. Its outside teeth mesh with those of the circular spline.

The circular spline deforms less than the flexspline and boasts more teeth. Usually staying still, it is stiff and is rotated about by the flex-spline. Although the flexspline has less teeth than the circular spline, its teeth match those of the latter, so it rotates at a slower pace than the wave generator.

The number of teeth on the circular spline and the flexspline determines the gear ratio and output speed since the output shaft is coupled to the circular spline.

 

Typical Issues and troubleshooting techniques

 

Reduced Precision or Backlash

 

Wear on the flexspline causes even harmonic drives to eventually show modest backlash. Check the lubrication, alignment, and condition of the internal components should accuracy be sacrificed.

Excessive Heat

 

Should the harmonic drive run too hot, overloading, insufficient cooling, or lubrication problems could all be causes. Make that cooling systems are running as expected and the system is not above its rated torque.
 

Noise or Vibration

 

Unusual noise or vibration usually signals a problem with lubrication or alignment. Make that the drive has enough lubricant and that every component is in correct alignment.
